The history of the Sun Trust Bank can be traced to 1811 when the Farmers Bank of Alexandria was set up. This bank can be treated as the earliest ancestor in the line and it definitely owes its origin to this bank for sure. The Trust Company of Georgia founded in the year 1891 is its direct corporate predecessor and its merger with the Sun Banks Inc in the year 1985 led to the setting up of the present Sun Trust Bank. After the successful merger in the mid 1980's, the Sun Trust Bank went on to acquire numerous other banking institutions to expand its reach and horizon and the most significant names to name in the order are: Third National Corporation of Tennessee, Crestar Financial of Virginia and National Commerce Financial Corporation.
The Sun Trust Bank is associated with a number of racing events as well as with the world renowned Coca Cola Company. With the latter, the relationship dates back to 1919 and a number of top management executives of each of the company are part of the board of directors in the other.
